Why Wi-Fi 6E works differently in Europe than the US

Wi-Fi 6E uses the same 802.11ax technology as Wi-Fi 6, but opens access to 6 GHz spectrum. The important detail for buyers is that the usable spectrum and permitted power modes depend on the country where the network will operate.

Europe opens the lower 6 GHz band

The European framework harmonises 5945–6425 MHz for wireless access systems. That is materially narrower than the 1200 MHz allocation often described in US guides, so channel plans and capacity assumptions must be based on European rules rather than copied from an American design.

The legal basis is Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/1067, as amended, with equipment requirements covered by ETSI EN 303 687.

Indoor low-power and very-low-power operation

European deployments currently use Low Power Indoor and Very Low Power classes. This makes 6 GHz especially useful inside offices, hospitality spaces, warehouses and vessel interiors where clean spectrum can be reused across a carefully designed access-point layout.

Outdoor or higher-power Standard Power guidance from the US relies on Automated Frequency Coordination. Do not assume that an AFC-capable access point can use that mode in Europe; confirm the permitted country profile before procurement and commissioning.

What changes in the design

Six-gigahertz signals attenuate faster through walls and structural materials than 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. A sound design therefore starts with the building or vessel, client locations and mounting constraints, not a promise that one newer access point replaces one older access point.

  • Confirm the destination country and approved regulatory profile.
  • Model 6 GHz coverage independently from 5 GHz coverage.
  • Check that priority client devices support 6 GHz and WPA3.
  • Validate channel width against density, reuse and the available European band.
